Organization of CRYPTREC

The organization of CRYPTREC(FY 2013 -) is composed of the Cryptographic Technology Evaluation Committee and the Cryptographic Techonology Promotion Committee, which are positioned under the Advisory Board for Cryptographic Technology, as shown in the following chart (Ref.The organization during FY 2022, The organization during FY 2021, The organization during FY 2013-2020, The organization during FY 2009-2012, The organization during FY 2003-2008).

Advisory Board for Cryptographic Technology

The purpose of the Advisory Board for Cryptographic Technology consist of experts convened by the Director-General of the Digital Agency, the Director-General for Cybersecurity of MIC, and the Director-General for Commerce and Information Policy Bureau of METI, is to make a contribution to the consideration of policies in the Digital Agency, MIC, and METI by hearing opinions of the participating experts from the viewpoint of promoting information security measures through the spread of cryptographic technology.

The Advisory Board for Cryptographic Technology includes the Cabinet Secretariat, the Digital Agency, the National Police Agency, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications(MIC), the Ministry of Justice, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI) and the Ministry of Defense participate as the observers.

Cryptographic Technology Evaluation Committee

The Cryptographic Technology Evaluation Committee is positioned under the Advisory Board; it investigates and examinens the following tasks:

  1. Monitoring and evaluation of the security and implementation properties of the cryptographic technology (CRYPTREC ciphers and others);
  2. Research on new-generation technologies (such as lightweight cryptography and post-quantum cryptography);
  3. Research on the secure utilization of cryptographic technologies (maintenance of technical guidelines; academic research on the security of cryptography and its publication).

Also, working groups are positioned under the Committee, to support its activity in research and examination.

The Cryptographic Technology Evaluation Committee holds session as a committee meeting of NICT and IPA, in which the Digital Agency, MIC, METI, the National Police Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, and so on, participate as observers.

The Cryptographic Technology Evaluation Committee was set up in FY 2013 to succeed all tasks of The Cryptographic Scheme Committee and some tasks of The Cryptographic Module Committee, which had been operated from FY 2009 through FY 2012.

Cryptographic Technology Promotion Committee

The Cryptographic Technology Promotion Committee is positioned under the Advisory Board; it investigates and examinens the following tasks:

  1. Research on the promotion of cryptographic technologies and the strengthening of security industries;
  2. Research on the utilization status of cryptographic technologies and research of their promotion strategy;
  3. Research on the strategy of cryptographic policy from mid-and-long term viewpoints.

Also, working groups are positioned under the Committee, to support its activity in research and examination.

The Cryptographic Technology Promotion Committee holds session as a committee meeting of NICT and IPA, in which the Digital Agency, MIC, METI, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense and so on, participate as observers.

The Cryptographic Technology Promotion Committee was set up in FY 2013 to succeed all tasks of The Cryptographic Operation Committee and some tasks of The Cryptographic Module Committee, which had been operated from FY 2009 through FY 2012.
